Justified Tragedy: The Adam Toledo Shooting
13 year old Adam Toledo was shot and killed by a police officer on March 29, 2021 in Chicago. Adam and his 21 year old friend had been firing a gun in the city when the cities gun sound capture technology and two 911 calls alerted police. After a short chase, Adam was shot by an officer. Many are claiming this was a bad shooting because Toledo was unarmed. But sometimes things aren’t that easy. We will go over the time line of exactly what happened in those 21 seconds that Chicago night. Time line from the video all taken from the officer’s body cam: 1:44 Officer gets out of the car and begins chase 1:50 Officer runs into the other suspect and throws him to the ground for his partner to deal with. 1:58 Audio starts as the officer is yelling stop 2:03 Toledo stops running and the officer begins yelling show me your hands 2:04 The officer yells “drop it” as we see the gun in the right hand of Adam down by his side 2:05 The officer repeats “drop it” as Adam Toledo turns around, raises his hands, and the shot rings out. 5:35 Gun is highlighted on ground behind the fence.
