Somehow, these weapons made it through to the Azov battalion in Mariupol, which leads me to believe that the Russian encirclement is porous. After an hour of boring numbers and graphs, a clean-cut, confident Steve Jobs had the floor, where he had taken this new device out of a canvas bag and boldly announced “Today, for the first time ever, I’d like to let Macintosh speak for itself.” When the machine spoke, there were audible gasps from the audience. The people who already familiarized themselves with the Apple II saw the smoke and mirrors, but for the rest, it was almost as if Apple had created something sentient. They created life. A concept that only seemed possible in the Jetsons 10 years prior, now conceived. It was “insanely great.” Just a couple of hours before, no one had even known what this device was. Only something that mystified millions of people when it was first uttered at the 1984 Super Bowl, through an even more mysterious commercial. It was just, Macintosh. This was a turning point for Apple as a company. They had a new focus of challenging the corporate computer conglomerate IBM, it was taking over the world. Apple was different. The Macintosh was going to be a computer by the people, for the people, and that’s what this commercial represented. A computer anybody could use with literally just the click of a button, rather than through some convoluted command lines that seemingly only the most niche of nerds could understand. A computer even children could use. When the Breakfast Club was having Saturday detention in Shermer, Illinois, Sean Ono Lennon was celebrating his 9th birthday with Steve Jobs and Andy Warhol, playing on MacPaint. At a superficial glance, the Macintosh in retrospect, looks over 10 years ahead of its time. It’s honestly insane that a machine as sophisticated as this could have even existed in the early 1980s, but as the Apple II users saw at the time, this was the smoke and mirrors talking. Despite all this, the Macintosh just didn’t have the future Steve Jobs thought it would. Instead, it sort of just dwindled away, but not how you would expect. Macintosh, with its decline, created a series of butterfly effects, both detrimental and extremely culturally significant in the long-term. It took so much away, but also gave us everything. But how? This is a machine with a story filled with as many complexities as its own moving parts, a story which blurs the line between computer folklore and fact. There's a new move from Google Maps that's going to piss Russia off. According to this, Google Maps reportedly made Russian military bases visible to users. Google banned advertising from Russian users after the Kremlin invaded Ukraine, and Russian authorities accused Google of starting a “information war” with the company blocking Russian media on YouTube. A new move came today from the United States-based technology giant after the strings between Russia and Google were stretched. According to new information, Google Maps made Russia's strategic military facilities visible to users. Following this move, new details of Russia's military infrastructure were revealed. In the search of Google Maps, images of military bases, intercontinental ballistic missiles, launch ramps, marine facilities and key command points all over Russia have become accessible. Some of the new footage revealed were Admiral Kuznetsov's aircraft carrier, a nuclear weapons depot near Murmansk, submarines in Kamcatka, the far East Peninsula, and images of a military air base in Kursk, a Western city just 150 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border. Under normal circumstances, satellite images of military facilities are traditionally presented to users of blurry or lower quality by Google Maps to maintain their classified status. But with this move from Google wing, this has changed. "Everyone can now see the Russian military infrastructure at a resolution of about 0.5 meters per pixel," the Twitter post by the Ukrainian Armed Forces said.

If the arming distance of the NLAW anti-tank missile is 20 meters. ... And the average height between stories is 3.3 meters. ... Jonathan Pie: How Putin Weaponized London’s Greed | NYT Opinion

In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, governments are taking aim at the superwealthy with close ties to Vladimir Putin, hitting them with sanctions, cutting off their access to offshore wealth, seizing their luxury yachts and villas and generally making it difficult to be a filthy rich person. But in the Opinion Video above, Jonathan Pie, the fictional broadcast journalist played by the comedian Tom Walker, argues that even while the United States and the European Union have come down hard on Russian oligarchs, Britain has taken a gentler approach. This response, he argues, is the result of a dark symbiotic relationship that the country has developed with ill-gotten Russian money. For years, Russian wealth has poured into Britain with few questions asked, helping to finance political campaigns and buoying the luxury property market. Russian oligarchs have been so happy to avail themselves of Britain’s laissez-faire regulatory climate to park their wealth and launder dirty money that the nation’s capital has earned the moniker Londongrad. And that, Pie argues, is why the British government has been reluctant to step up the pressure on the Russian elite. The United Nations is calling for an independent investigation into evidence that war crimes have been committed by Russian forces around Ukraine’s capital Kyiv. As Ukrainian troops have re-entered areas close to the capital, after Russian forces retreated, they have reported finding mass graves and hundreds of bodies. The BBC has seen evidence of bodies of civilians lying in the street in the town of Bucha, some with their hands and feet bound. Russia says the scenes have been fabricated. BonziBuddy - The Internet Spyware That Plagued Windows (Demonstration)

BonziBuddy (or "Bonzi Buddy") was a piece of internet spyware masquerading as a virtual assistant. It was created by Bonzi Software, a company that was once one of the most visited sites on the web but, through subsequent events, ended up meeting its massive downfall. Depending on your age, your earliest memories of using a computer probably vary. Some of you might remember using the Apple IIc or watching Flash Animations, but I am sure that, for some of you watching this, your earliest memories are of this little guy (SHOW). It was in 1999 when the internet became home to this new computer program: BonziBuddy. Innocent looking enough, but what you probably didn’t know was that this cute virtual assistant was, at one point, responsible for more than $1 billion in punitive damages, but how? Just like many pieces of malware and internet spyware, the software attracted many people with its seemingly useful features, with all its malevolent doings hidden within. It was designed to assist users during a time where mass-use and understanding of the internet was quite new, but in reality, the program was collecting user data for advertising purposes as well as contaminating Windows with irritating features and misleading system information. BonziBuddy was a wolf in sheep’s clothing, or…purple gorilla clothing. But how was such a strange program able to do all of this? What is the story that gave BonziBuddy the legacy that it has today? The events of this tale date all the way back to the mid 1990s, particularly during the prominence of Windows 95. Microsoft had gained tremendous success with its new operating system, marketing the product in a way that could appeal to the masses. Computers were no longer part of some niche community or only for businesses. Now, your grandmother could use a computer. When it came to design methodology, Microsoft made the bold move of making their target audience everyone. But now, it was time for them to make using the computer even easier, and they needed to figure out how. The answer was within their ambitious release of Office 97. Their approach with this program was strongly influenced by a research project from Stanford University conducted by Clifford Nass and Byron Reeves, theorizing that people subconsciously treat computers like human beings. Microsoft had to figure out a way to capitalize off this, and that is exactly what they did, with Introducing Office Assistant. Clippy was the answer to all your problems. Whether you have heard about it in retrospect or experienced it yourself, obviously this didn’t work. It seems that Microsoft took this research publication a little too literally. Clippy was universally hated and deemed way too distracting. It took a while for Microsoft to get the hint, and Clippy was ultimately removed from future Office versions in 2003, being mostly ignored during that stretch of time. Microsoft had been working on assistant technology for quite some time before Office 97, with Microsoft Bob for Windows 3.1, and its Microsoft Agent characters such as Peedy the parrot and Genie, sort of prototypes of Clippy. What does this all have to do with BonziBuddy? Microsoft may have failed with Office Assistant, but other companies thought the idea still had potential and that they could do better. A couple years prior to Windows 95 was the formation of Bonzi software, created by brothers Joe and Jay Bonzi. Bonzi Software’s existence was the perfect concoction of timing and pretty brilliant marketing. They had popped up during a time where people didn’t really understand the internet, or know what direction it was going in. Bonzi Software didn’t really need a whole lot of ingenuity to become somewhat successful. What helped them take off was their voice-email application. Rather than sending text over email, you could send a voice recording of yourself! This might not seem very practical considering that you could just call somebody on the phone using the exact same phone line you use to get online, but it worked! This allowed them to create some other programs that would enhance your internet speed as well as protect your PC from potential security breaches. In reality, they really didn't do anything other than basic system changes. By the time Clippy was popular, Bonzi Software had released the program all of you have been waiting for: BonziBuddy.
